How does the Savings Goal Calculator work?

It uses the future value of an ordinary annuity formula: FV = PV(1 + r)ⁿ + PMT × [((1 + r)ⁿ − 1) / r], where PV is your current savings, r is your monthly interest rate, n is the number of months, and PMT is your monthly contribution. In "Monthly Payment" mode it solves for PMT; in "Time to Goal" mode it solves for n.

If your current savings already meet or exceed your goal amount, the calculator shows $0 required per month (or 0 months needed) and flags that your goal is already met.

Yes. Enter an annual interest rate (e.g. from a high-yield savings account) and the calculator compounds it monthly. Set the rate to 0% to see the simple, interest-free version of the plan.

Why is "months needed" always a whole number?

Contributions happen once per month in this model, so the calculator rounds up to the next full month — you can't make a fractional deposit. The result guarantees you'll have at least your goal amount by that month.
