How is download time calculated from file size and speed?

The ×8 converts bytes to bits, since file sizes are usually shown in bytes (MB, GB) but internet speeds are advertised in bits (Mbps). For example, a 45 GB file on a 100 Mbps connection takes (45,000,000,000 × 8) ÷ 100,000,000 = 3,600 seconds, or exactly 1 hour.

Switch to "File Size → Required Speed" mode, enter your file size and the time you want it done in, and the calculator back-solves: speed = (file size in bytes × 8) ÷ target time in seconds. A 45 GB file you want done in 1 hour needs at least 100 Mbps.

Mbps (megabits per second) is how ISPs advertise plans — "100 Mbps" means 100 million bits per second. MBps (megabytes per second) is how browsers and download managers often show live transfer speed. 1 MBps = 8 Mbps, so mixing them up gives an 8x error: a "100 Mbps" connection downloads at roughly 12.5 MBps, not 100 MBps. In practice, real-world throughput is usually somewhat below the advertised plan speed due to network overhead, Wi-Fi conditions, server-side bandwidth limits, and other devices sharing your connection — so actual downloads often take longer than the theoretical value shown here.

No — this calculator assumes a single, constant-speed connection using your full available bandwidth. Torrent and multi-threaded downloads can sometimes exceed a single-connection estimate by pulling from many peers/servers at once, or fall short of it if peers are slow, so treat the result as a single-source baseline rather than an exact prediction.
