What is hyperfocal distance?

What do the "near limit" and "far limit" mean?

Everything between the near limit and far limit is considered within the depth of field. When your subject distance is at or beyond the hyperfocal distance, the far limit becomes infinity.

Why does sensor format (camera type) matter?

Depth of field depends on the "circle of confusion" — the largest blur spot the eye still perceives as a sharp point — which is smaller on smaller sensors. A Micro Four Thirds or APS-C sensor has a smaller circle of confusion than full frame, which changes the calculated hyperfocal distance and near/far limits even with identical focal length and aperture.
